There was a while during quarantine that I enjoyed being on Zoom outside of having to attend half-assed lectures as we struggled to get a grasp on remote learning those first few weeks of April. My friends and I made the most out of the free accounts attached to out student emails. We sang happy birthday to each other over zoom. We had themed parties over zoom. I watched Marcella open one beer bottle with another, something that she would have done in my dorm room two doors down, over zoom. One day, my three roommates and I answered the NYT’s 36 Questions to Fall in love over zoom. Marcella sharing her screen so that we could read each question, our little heads in boxes floating above the powerpoint slide.
As I was reading Ali Smith’s third book in the Seasonal Quartet, Spring, I was reminded of this tender moment from the early days of quarantine. Brit, the protagonist, and a 12-year-old girl she meets on a train headed towards Scotland play a game called “Lucky 13: I ask 13 questions, then we both have to answer them.” There are quite a few new subscribers here (Hello!!) and I was thinking about writing something introductory and this game reminiscent of 36 Questions feels perfect. So, do you wanna play?

If I were an animal I would be an Arctic fox (according to Abby).
If I was a bird I would be a mourning dove. Specifically the mourning doves that live in Northwest DC. Even more specifically, the mourning doves that built a nest over the AC unit in the dining room of my college house.
If I was an insect I would be a tiny black ant. Monomorium minimum.
One thing I’m really good at is listening (this is a hard thing to answer) and giving recommendations (duh).
I would most like to die unknowingly.
Those are the “Lucky 13” questions. Thanks for being here! If you want to share your own answers, gab away in the comments.
XX,
Gabbie
I miss you and our meals smmmm
Gab!
I feel like a celebrity! Those zooms were so sweet and so fun, a bright light! I miss hours long video calls (you know I’m a sucker for them) but now I have to but my data as I go and being a cheap lady makes me hesitate. (You should still call me anytime ;))
Anyway I love seeing all these things that I think I probably already knew about you written down. You are a cheeseburger girl and your favorite thing to wear is probably what pops into my head if I think “gabbie outfit”.
Love you sooooo much
